Lubbock joins nation to remember heroes on Memorial Day

Many South Plains residents will join the nation in a day of services to honor our country's heroes on Memorial Day Monday.

The holiday, which will see most government offices closed and services like trash delivery and U.S. Postal Service delivery off for the day, is a time for the nation to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.

Lubbock organizations mark Memorial Day

To recognize area military veterans on Memorial Day, Monday, Lubbock’s American Legion Post 575, is hosting a free pancake and sausage breakfast. All area veterans and their families are invited to this annual event. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 9 a.m. on Memorial Day, at the American Legion Post 575 Bingo Hall, 6628 66th St. (½ mile west of Milwaukee). Post commander Missy Helbert said that, while Lubbock Legionnaires support veterans throughout the year, to recognize them on Memorial Day, Post members get together to welcome them and their families to this yearly, informal breakfast.

At 10 a.m. Monday, Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park will host its annual Memorial Day service at 5740 West 19th Street. Ahead of the event, volunteers and staff placed flags on graves to help mark the occasion.

Lubbock, government offices closed

City, state and federal offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, May 30.

Residential Trash CollectionThere will be no collection on Monday. Waste Collections from Monday and Tuesday will be shifted to Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, according to a city news release.Recycling/Landfill OperationsCitizen Convenience Centers, the West Texas Regional Disposal Facility (WTRDF), and the Caliche Canyon Landfill will be closed on Monday. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.

LibrariesAll Lubbock Public Library locations will be closed Monday. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.Cultural FacilitiesThe Buddy Holly Center, Silent Wings Museum and the Garden & Arts Center will be closed Monday. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.

Community CentersCommunity centers will be open Saturday, May 27, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and will be closed on Monday, May 29. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, May 30.

Clapp Park PoolOpen Sunday and Monday, May 28-29, from 1 - 6 p.m.
