Lubbock Mayor Tray Payne won't seek re-election in 2024
Lubbock Mayor Tray Payne announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election to a second term in the May 2024 election.
Payne, a Lubbock attorney who has served as the city's 36th mayor since 2022, announced his decision via social media Wednesday evening, stating, "There is a season for everything in life, and at this time and in this season, I need to step aside so that others may serve this great community."

The mayor wrote that serving the city during his tenure was an honor, adding he will keep working hard until the end of his term in May.
Payne was elected to a two-year term as mayor on the City Council in the May 2022, earning over 67% of the vote.
Adam Hernandez, who also ran for mayor in the last election, is the only candidate who has filed to run in the 2024 mayoral race.
