New Luca Guadagnino Film Taps Daniel Craig And Drew Starkey As Lovers

Daniel Craig has found his new (fictional) love interest.

Drew Starkey, best known for his role as Rafe Cameron in Outer Banks, has been cast opposite the Knives Out star in the latest endeavor from director Luca Guadagnino.

The film will be based on a short novel by William S. Burroughs called Queer. Published in 1985, over 30 years after it was written, the book tells the story of Lee, who becomes obsessed with a drug-addicted discharged American Navy serviceman named Allerton during an otherwise aimless period of his life spent in Mexico City.

Craig will play Lee, a stand-in for Burroughs in the semi-autobiographical tale, while Starkey will take on the role of Allerton. Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, and Henrique Zaga have also been cast in the project, although their intended roles are not currently clear.

Queer was first announced late last year, with only Craig cast at the time, and a note that Guadagnino was seeking funding for the independent film. Another adaptation was in the works over a decade ago with Steve Buscemi attached to direct, but nothing ever came of it.

Fortunately, the stars seem to be aligning for fans of the work this time around. Variety reports that the movie is scheduled to begin shooting in Mexico City this month, with a script from playwright Justin Kuritzkes.

Guadagnino recently completed post-production on Challengers, a comedy about tennis rivals starring Zendaya and his follow-up to 2022’s Bones and All. That film is expected to hit theaters in September.
