Lucas adds New Balance Nationals title to resume, coaching moves and area honors

Awards, all-state announcements, gold medals, promotions and more, here's a roundup of summer news regarding area athletes and coaches:

Lucas a national champ

Bloomington North's Hadley Lucas has added another gold medal to her haul this year, winning the top flight girls' title in shot put at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Lucas fired off a 47-1¾ with second place coming in at 46-5¼.

Lucas was also fifth in the discus (150-3), with the winner going 163-3, and was one of just two athletes to place top five in both.

Lucas also competed in the Rising Stars portion of the hammer throw and placed fourth with a 140-6, four feet out of first.

Coaching moves

Former Eastern Greene head girls' basketball coach Greg Burton is back on the sidelines, hired by Eminence to runs its girls' program. He succeeds Kevin Corsaro, who left after guiding the Eels to their first winning season since 2010-11.

Edgewood boys' assistant boys' basketball coach Brad Moorhead has left for a new job. His brother Trent was named the new boys' head coach at Hauser in May.

Cloverdale boys' basketball coach Patrick Rady has stepped down after eight seasons with the Clovers, going 100-77.

Eastern Greene grad Mike Burris has been elevated to associate head coach with the men's basketball program at the University of Indianapolis.

Owen Valley head volleyball coach Max Dunn, a former assistant at Bloomington North and South, is headed to the next level, added an assistant to the new staff at Siena College in New York. The Saints are rebuilding after a seven-win season. Dunn was the Patriots' head coach for just one season before the opportunity arose.

Junior Olympics track

North rising junior DeDe Eberle won the long jump for girls age 15-16 at the USATF Indiana State Junior Olympics Championship meet at Manchester College last weekend.

Eberle jumped 16-0¼ twice to win the event.

St. Charles' Ashley Greer was a triple winner in the girls' 13-14 throwing events, taking the javelin (76-1), shot put (30-9¼) and discus (84-5).

Representing the Indiana Track Club, both are eligible to compete in the Region 7 meet at Wabash College in Crawfordsville July 7-10.

Swimming the distance

Six local swimmers were among 62 from Indiana who took part in the Central Zone Open Water Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. on June 17. Twelve states were represented.

Three Bloomington swimmers led the state in the girls' 5K event. North's Ashley Freel was eighth in one hour, two minutes, 13.48 seconds, while North's Hope Westphal was 11th (1:02:43.50) and Alex Eakin was 13th (1:03:03.73). Annie Murer of North was 48th (1:10:22.06).

The winning time was 51:41.34 but she was the only swimmer to break the hour mark.

In the girls' 2.5K for ages 13-14, Harper Eakin was sixth in 32:20.58.

And in the boys' 5K, North's Ty Mayer took 22nd in 1:02:34.34.

The top eight in each event earned medals with 9-16 getting ribbons.

Freel, Westphal, Murer and Mayer represented Club Olympia Swim Team out of Columbus while the Eakins swam for Indiana Swim Club. The Indiana boys were second and girls third leading to second overall, trailing only Illinois.

Academic honors

The Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches have named their Academic All-State teams.

The girls' squad includes Maya Anderson-Corns, Emma Callahan, Lily Myers and Isabella Vesperini of South; Rachel Allison, Bea Cakmak and Avery Njau of North; Anna Tieman of Eastern Greene and Clara Crain and Abby Evans of Edgewood. Honorable mention went to Ella Francis, Emma McDivitt and Janel Solie of North and Zoie Ault of Eastern Greene.

The boys' team included Aidan Ball, Kyle Clark, Jackson Crenshaw, Broc Murphy, Jack Nelson and Connor Shin of North; Jack Hallett, Ivin Tait, Avery Weinstraub and Zander West of South; Alex Schwanke of Eastern Greene and Anthony Gough and Ronan Hancock of Edgewood.

• The Indiana Softball Coaches Association Academic All-State team included Jessica Young of Bloomington South. Honorable mention went to Caitlyn Boteler and Paris Stuffle of North, Kayli Reed and Emma Crider of South and Alaina Wenzler and Hannah Lane of Edgewood.

South was named an Academic All-State team with a 3.788 GPA.

• The Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Academic All-State team includes South's Ava Rupp and Chelsie Lindauer. North was named an Academic All-State Team.

USATF Nationals

Two Bloomington athletes, South grad Deakin Volz and North grad Logan Calvin will be among those competing in the USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. from Thursday though Sunday.

Calvin and men's shot put will be in action on Friday starting at 9:42 p.m. (EDT) while Volz and the men's pole vault will be competed on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Junior state golf qualifiers

Bloomington South's Connor Byon and Jacob Paine and North's Jacon Knapp are made the cut at the Boys State Junior Championship qualifier at Country Oaks.

Byon was seventh at 77 while Knapp and Paine each had 78s to tie for eighth to qualify for the finals in West Lafayette June 27-July 1.

South's Happy Gilmore fired a 1-over 72 for tie for 11th in the US Junior Am qualifier at the Ackerman-Allen Course in West Lafayette. He had five birdies. South's Nick Bellush was T23 at 74. Only the top four advance and it took a 69 to get out.

Bellush is also competing in the Indiana Amateur this week on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick.

All-Star games

Reminder that South's Jessica Young will be participating in the Indiana Softball Coaches Association All-Star games Friday and Saturday at Indiana University.

South's Sam Young will play in the Indiana Football Coaches Association's North-South All-Star game on July 15 at North Central.

Summer baseball

A couple of South grads are busy pitching this summer in Indiana.

Wil Stockman, a sophomore at Lake Land junior college in Illinois is pitching for the Kokomo Jackrabbits of the Northwoods League while Jacob Young from Dallas Baptist is with the Terre Haute Rex of the Prospect League.
