Lucas pulls off second upset, knocks off Lowellville to advance to regional semifinals
LOWELLVILLE — Don't look now, but Lucas is at it again.
The 10th-seeded Cubs picked up their second playoff win, knocking off host No. 2 Lowellville 35-25 Friday. It is the fifth consecutive season Lucas has won two or more playoff games.
After the Rockets started the game with a scoring drive to make it 7-0, the Cubs responded when Logan Toms ran five yards for the tying score. The Rockets added another score but missed the point-after attempt and led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
With 9:56 left in the first half, Graysen Jackson scored to give the Cubs a 14-13 lead, and Zach Diehl made it 14 straight Lucas points with a 24-yard run with 4:15 left in the first half to make it 21-13 at halftime.
Lowellville pulled to within 21-19 on a touchdown pass but missed on the two-point conversion and that's where the score remained until Diehl added his second 24-yard touchdown run of the game to make it 28-19 with 10:17 to play. Toms put the finishing touches on the win with a 14-yard touchdown run before a Rockets comeback fell short.
The Cubs (6-6) piled up 373 total yards with 368 coming on the ground on 54 carries. Toms led the way with 217 yards and two scores on 28 carries.
Lucas advanced to play Danville (10-2) in a Division VII Region 25 semifinal on Saturday at a site to be determined.
