'How Lucky': Weather Enthusiast Catches Plane Struck by Lightning

Weather enthusiast William Justo couldn’t believe his luck when he pulled in to record some storm activity outside San Jose on March 30, only to capture the moment a plane appeared to be struck by lightning from his roadside vantage point.

“I was just filming a thunderstorm that had formed around the region, particularly in areas between south San Jose and Morgan Hill,” Justo told Storyful.

“I pulled over along Monterey Road and observed the lightning, and that’s the moment I captured this rare occurrence!” he said.

“How lucky I was to capture this?” he wrote on X.

According to the National Weather Service, commercial passenger planes can expect to be hit by lightning an average of one or two times a year. Credit: William Justo via Storyful
