Lucky's Market is closing 32 stores and keeping seven open. See the list of stores shuttering

Lucky's Market is closing the majority of its stores.

The Boulder, Colorado-based grocery store chain plans to shutter 32 of its 39 stores in nine states, according to local media stories and posts on individual store Facebook pages. ProgressiveGrocer.com was one of the first to report the news.

Twenty of the chain's 21 Florida locations, including stores in South Florida, Central Florida, on the west coast and the state’s capital of Tallahassee, are closing, according to local media. The West Melbourne location on the Space Coast will stay open, reported Florida Today, which is part of the USA TODAY Network.

Lucky's officials did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's requests for comment Tuesday and later in the day, locations posted their fate on store Facebook pages. On Wednesday, the corporate Lucky's account posted.

"We are sad to say the rumors are true. We’re closing many of our stores and couldn’t be more upset to be leaving so many communities who have supported us for years," the post said. "What we built with you, our loyal customers, was not in vain. You helped contribute to our mission: Good Food For All."

The post confirmed the seven stores that would stay open but did not mention the fate of stores under construction.

Two Ohio stores – locations in Cleveland and Columbus – posted that they were staying open, while the Coral Springs, Florida, store confirmed its upcoming closure and said it would offer "significant discounts on all products in the store" starting Wednesday.

Other closing locations also mentioned discounts would start Wednesday.

The natural and organic foods grocer was founded in 2003 by husband and wife Bo and Trish Sharon. The store is known for its “Sip & Stroll” program that allows customers to drink a pint of beer or glass of wine while shopping.

That program was mentioned in Wednesday's corporate Facebook post.

"We appreciate the many shopping trips you put in and pints of beer you drank in our stores," the post said.

It had 17 stores when Kroger invested in 2016 and grew to 39 stores in 10 states. In December, Kroger announced it was divesting its ownership share in Lucky's.

"We just didn't think it created a good return," Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen said during Kroger's Dec. 5 earnings call.
