“If it wasn’t for Vogue, it would still be raining,” joked Marc Metrick, president of Saks Fifth Avenue. “That’s the influence they have, even over the weather!” Perhaps it was Vogue, or maybe it was Andy Roddick, but if anyone it was Lucy Boynton. The actress arrived, fresh off her commute from Manhattan (where she was promoting her latest project, The Politician), appearing lovelier than ever in a feathered frock by La DoubleJ. “I think this is my first time in the Hamptons,” remarked Boynton. “This is a really romantic first time—I’m loving it!”

And what a wonderful entrée to the Hamptons it was. For the occasion Saks and Vogue partnered up to host a summery evening that began with poolside cocktails in Sagaponack at 494 Hedges Lane, a sprawling Shingle style estate designed by Michael Davis. The emerald green lawn was dotted with flickering candles, and flagstone steps led guests out toward the property’s tennis court, which had just a day before been tented in anticipation of the gloomy weather. The forecast thankfully behaved itself, and come 6 p.m. the evening was free and clear of rain, much to the delight of the guests—Hamptons mainstays like Athena Calderone; Sailor Brinkley Cook and her brother, Jack; Saks’s Roopal Patel (in a striped Silvia Tcherassi dress); Danielle Snyder; and Casey Fremont Crowe. Also in attendance were Flaviana Matata (festive in all-white Monse), Tanya Taylor, Nausheen Shah, and Dani Evans. Unsurprisingly it was an incredibly well-dressed scene, like everyone had just stepped out of a Saks campaign.

Last summer saw Saks host a dinner at the nearby Wölffer Estate vineyards, but this year things got even more festive with a game of the Hamptons unofficial sport, tennis. Andy Roddick came out, along with wife, Brooklyn Decker, for a quick game against Luka Gregorc. “This isn’t a normal game,” Roddick announced to spectators, “so clap and shout and make some noise.” And the crowd did just that; the sport’s formalities were skipped over, and guests felt as though they were watching a match among friends. (For those keeping score Roddick took the win.)

Shortly after the game the space was cleared, and the astounding team behind Raúl Àvila (of Met Gala fame) put together a dinner table on the tennis court with a speed that rivaled Roddick’s famous serve. Boynton took her place somewhere in the middle, near Roddick and Decker, and chatted with her dinner guests about life after “Bohemian Rhapsody madness” and getting back into the swing of things after a relaxing summer. Roddick meanwhile shared tennis tips for curious listeners: sunscreen and electrolyte drops for hydration. He, along with the rest of the partygoers, refueled with a delicious seasonal dinner of gazpacho and roasted chicken, and a crowd-pleasing dessert of ginger-and-honeycomb ice cream. It was the cherry on top of everyone’s night, and quite possibly the ideal way for Boynton to spend her first night out east.
