Lucy Liu is set to play a villain in the upcoming sequel to the 2019 DC comic book film adaptation “Shazam!”

Liu has been tapped for the role of the character Kalypso, sister to Helen Mirren’s Hespera in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” reports Variety.

While both Liu’s and Mirren’s characters don’t have direct comic book counterparts in DC Comics, in the film, they will be introduced as daughters of Atlas, a known figure in Greek mythology. In the comics and the film, Atlas is one of the six sources of Shazam’s powers, granting the hero superhuman stamina.

Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, who respectively play the superhero Shazam and his teenage alter ego, Billy Batson, both reprise their roles in the sequel. Filmmaker David F. Sandberg will also be returning to helm “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” from a screenplay written by Henry Gayden. The movie is set to premiere in theaters on June 2, 2023.

Liu, who recently starred in the popular series “Elementary” and “Why Women Kill,” has also been an active voice in the campaign against anti-Asian hate.
