Former Made in Chelsea star Lucy Watson has taken to Twitter to share a statement about her views on horse racing after a heated exchange with Love Island's Chris Hughes.

Lucy originally took to social media to condemn the practice of horse racing after the culmination of Royal Ascot over the weekend. She criticised the treatment of horses in the sport and wrote that "horses deserve better".

But Chris responded by saying that horses were "the best looked after animal in the world" and claimed that "more would die in the wild than on the racecourse."

The heated exchange continued and, now, Lucy has shared a statement to Twitter to double-down on her stance. She captioned the post: "Morning thoughts #banhorseracing."

"I too used to support events many years ago, as well as own my own horses and compete with them. I used to kick and whip the horses I really loved according to my teachers instructions. I didn’t know any better. That needs to be said," she wrote.

"I learnt how to view horses as individuals & recognise they are being used as commodities. This kind of perspective doesn’t change overnight, I get that. But it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that horses are risking their lives at the races for the sake of entertainment. Just because we’ve ‘always done’ something, doesn’t make it right."

In the original exchange, Lucy rebuked Chris' claims that the horses are well looked after and wrote that "approx 250 horses die every year on British race courses".

"They’re bred into existence to be used as commodities & forcibly risk their lives for people like you to profit… unbiased opinions only please," Lucy wrote.

Chris then suggested that Lucy visit a racing yard during National Racehorse Week, claiming it is "insightful and eye-opening." Lucy refused, to which Chris responded that she didn't want to be "educated."
