Luke Bryan's 18-Year-Old Rescue Dog Poochie Dies Less Than 2 Weeks After Singer Adopted Him

Luke Bryan and his wife Caroline are grieving the loss of their senior rescue dog whom they recently adopted.

Earlier this month, Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in Nashville, Tennessee revealed that their 18-year-old shelter dog Poochie had gone home with the couple on Feb. 9.

However, less than two weeks later, Poochie sadly died.

Though they are reeling from their pup’s death, Caroline, 39, said the family was grateful to have spent the final two weeks of Poochie’s life by his side and giving him the love and attention he always deserved.

“‘If the kindest souls were rewarded with the longest lives, dogs would outlive us all,’??” she began the emotional Instagram post on Wednesday, alongside several adorable photos and a video of the snoozing Aussie mix.

“My heart is sad but full to post this… our sweet Prince Poochie has passed away,” she said. “He lived 18 years and was loved by so many people.”

Caroline also added that the couple’s sons, Tatum “Tate” Christopher, 8, and Thomas “Bo” Boyer, 10, would miss their new pet and his lovable noises.

“My kids especially loved to hear him snore when he slept!” she recalled.

“Thank you @proverbs1210animalrescue for giving our family the opportunity to love this sweet dog,” she finished. “Poochie loved you all. #adoptdontshop”

The shelter also paid tribute to the late dog and the Bryan family for taking the senior in.

“While we would have loved for Poochie to have lived another 18 years, we are grateful for the time we gave him with our foster, Lacey Marie and with his adoptive family, the Bryans,” the shelter wrote on Facebook.

“Poochie enjoyed his time with the Bryan family. He even felt well enough to stroll in their pastures and be a dog again. He sadly passed away a few days ago, but he was loved and passed in his sleep on a big comfy bed. He is now buried on the Bryan farm amid other beloved pets.”

“Loving my new buddy,” Bryan, 42, had tweeted in response to PEOPLE’s initial story last week.

The rescue shelter first posted about Poochie on Feb. 1 through their Instagram. Before the Bryans spotted him online, the senior dog was living in a foster home due to an owner surrender.

“We pulled 18-year-old Poochie from a shelter after his family surrendered him due to becoming allergic,” Lavonne Redferrin, Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue’s director and founder, told PEOPLE.

“We often step in and pull seniors, sickly and injured animals who are likely to be overlooked,” she said.

Redferrin added that the rescue planned to keep Poochie in a “forever foster home where we would take care of all of his needs for the rest of his life,” but then the Bryans expressed interest and sent in an adoption application with “impeccable” references.

Not long after the initial foster post, the rescue shelter revealed the country star and his wife had officially taken Poochie home.

“We are so thrilled for Poochie and know he is in great hands,” the rescue’s founder said at the time of the adoption.

“Caroline Bryan has graciously given us updates on our sweet boy. Their adopting this sweet old guy will allow us the chance to save yet another,” Redferrin continued, adding that she knew “there is a song somewhere in this story.”

Poochie lived with other dogs, cats, chickens, goats and more at the Bryans’ Tennessee farm until his final days.
