Luke Macfarlane isn’t checking into the Barbie dreamhouse — but he almost did.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Single All the Way actor (and new dad) opened up about how he was cast in a role for the highly anticipated Barbie movie, but then turned it down.

Gay gasp!

As Macfarlane explained, he was faced with a tough choice when he landed two roles at the same time. “It was interesting because I had auditioned for a small part in Barbie and got it,” Macfarlane recalled. “And then I got an email from Nick [Stoller, the director of Bros] that was like, ‘I think you’d be really great in this part.’ I was like, ‘Great. I have this offer for Barbie, so you gotta let me know.’”

Initially, he had hopes of starring in both films, he said. “We tried to make it work, and I was like, ‘You know what? I really, really wanted to work on this show.” However, his schedule wouldn’t allow him to do both.

Macfarlane was faced with a choice: a supporting role in Barbie or a lead one in Bros. Ultimately he went for his role in Bros because of the connection he felt to the character. “Careers are funny things — you never really know,” he said. “When I read about the character on the page, I was like, ‘This is somebody I understand.’”

Still, it wasn’t an easy decision for the actor, who described making it as brutal. “Yeah, the timing couldn’t work out for both. I’m not trying to sound boastful. It was a small, little part, but I’ve never been part of some beautiful, big, cool thing like that,” Mcfarlane shared. “It would have been cool to be able to do both.”

Sigh... what could have been.
