Purdue brought two teams to Illini VEX's robotics competition, Cornfield Clash, this weekend, one of which ended up taking home the excellence award that will serve as their ticket to the world championship.

Event commentator and Illini VEX cofounder Taylor Xia laughed about the two Purdue teams going head-to-head early in the competition Saturday: which of their rivals should the Illinois team cheer for?

BLRS2 came out on top overall, winning the tournament championship and robot skills championship as well as receiving the excellence award.

High school teams from Batavia took home the championship for their category, while teams from Aurora took home the excellence award that will carry them to the state competition. (In the high school age group for VEX competitions, schools pair off so that each team only needs to build one robot, rather than the two required from college teams.)

Even the kingfisher made an appearance during the college competition on Saturday, with a Kingfisher Task Force member briefly explaining their goal of convincing the University of Illinois to officially instate the bird as school mascot.

This was the second Cornfield Clash hosted by Illini VEX. President Anes Kim said the team is ready to catch up on sleep after the busy weekend.
