Luke Vickers, Janine Murphy, Sophie Baker advance through OHSAA state swim meet prelims

CANTONPerry freshman Sophie Baker solidified her position as Stark County's surprise swimmer of the year Friday.

Baker advanced to consolation finals in both of her events during girls Division I preliminaries of the OHSAA state meet in C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The top eight times from prelims advanced to Saturday's finals. The next eight earned spots in the consolation finals. Baker was the highest freshman finisher in the 100 backstroke, with the 15th-best overall time. She was 16th, second among freshmen, in the 100 freestyle.

Jackson senior Janine Murphy was out ahead of Baker in the backstroke, making the consolation finals with the 10th-fastest time.

Stark County's top individual in the boys meet was Jackson sophomore Luke Vickers, who advanced to championship finals with the seventh-fastest time (56.40) in the 100 breaststroke.

Hoover sophomore Peter Helmuth posted a 50.83 in the 100 backstroke, the fastest time advancing into consolation finals, and ninth overall.

Hoover's boys slipped into championship finals in the 400 freestyle relay (Ryan Ehlers, Boston Sullivan, Helmuth, TJ Bragg). Both Hoover and New Albany posted a 3:09.18, but Hoover won a tiebreaker, sending New Albany to consolation finals, which also will include Jackson (No. 11 at 3:10.39 with the team of Holden Nist, Ezra Herring, Vickers and Daniel Ham.

Area swimmers earning spots in Saturday's girls consolation finals included

Hoover, No. 11 in the 200 freestyle relay (Amanda Fetsko, Kate Baxter, Annabelle Nixon, Raeli Blandine).

Blandine, No. 12 in the 50 freestyle.

Green in the medley relay, No. 13 (Olivia Scheibelhoffer, Olivia Elgin, Sydney Peterson, Anne Shroyer)

Elgin, No. 13 in the 100 freestyle; No. 15 in the 100 breaststroke.

Peterson, No. 13 in the 100 butterfly.

Hoover, No. 16 in the 400 freestyle relay (Anna Fetsko, Jenna Fetsko, Nixon, Blandine).

Boys reaching consolation finals included:

Hoover in the 200 freestyle relay, No. 10 (Ryan Ehlers, Carter Black, Boston Sullivan, TJ Bragg)

Jackson in the medley relay, No. 12 (Daniel Ham, Luke Vickers, Ezra Herring, Samuel Thayer)

Jackson sophomore Holden Nist, No. 15 in the 500 freestyle.

Herring, No. 16 in the 100 butterfly.

Ehlers, No. 16 in the 50 freestyle.

Green is a consolation alternate in the boys 200 freestyle relay (Noah Budd, Caleb Carr, Camden Doerrer, Riley Sumption) and the girls 400 freestyle relay (Peterson, Laina Swartzwalder, Scheibelhoffer, Elgin).

Not advancing out of prelims were Nixon (No. 20 in the girls 100 freestyle and No. 23 in the 50 freestyle), Blandine (No. 22 in the girls 100 freestyle), Ham (No. 23 in the boys individual medley), and Scheibelhoffer (No. 23 in the backstroke).

The Jackson girls 400 freestyle relay (Nina Shulik, Alexis Lewis, Abra Manofsky, Murphy) was No. 21.
