Hello, I’m Scott Wartman. I cover Hamilton County and grew up on the West Side. For my entire life, I passed by the massive, weathered factory just off the Western Hills Viaduct, never really knowing what it was.
Turns out, the Lunkenheimer Co.’s factory has been at the entrance to the West Side longer than me, or my parents and even grandparents. The 115-year-old factory has seen better days, having sat vacant for several years. Concrete and paint continue to fall off. Windows are broken and boarded up. Basically, it doesn’t present the best picture for those traveling to the West Side as they get off the Western Hills Viaduct.Now, a congressman, the Port and residents hope to clean up the factory in hopes someone will turn it around someday.I traveled to South Fairmount, a neighborhood my grandfather grew up in, and looked at the future, a future residents are optimistic about.
