LVHN offering second bivalent booster to older adults, immunocompromised people

Lehigh Valley Health Network is now offering second doses of the COVID-19 bivalent mRNA booster to immunocompromised individuals 6 years and older and all adults 65 and older.

Appointments can be made through a patient’s Lehigh Valley Physician Group primary care physician’s office.

The second bivalent booster should be scheduled at least four months after the first.

“The bivalent vaccines include the original COVID vaccine as well as an updated component aimed at the BA.4 and BA.5 variants which currently cause the majority of worldwide COVID infections. The original monovalent vaccines will no longer be available for use in the United States,” LVHN said.

LVHN also recommends initial bivalent booster shots for people who have not yet received them, especially older adults, immunocompromised people age 6 and older and people who are at a higher risk due to multiple medical issues.

“Vaccination remains one of our most important tools to reduce the risk of serious complications related to COVID-19,” said Dr. Timothy Friel, chair of the Department of Medicine and infectious diseases specialist at LVHN. “This is particularly important in those individuals who are most vulnerable and at highest risk for hospitalization and death following infection.”
