Correia is charged with stealing about two-thirds of almost $400,000 he got from seven investors for his app called SnoOwl.
LISA HUGHES: The corruption trial of former Fall River mayor Jasiel Correia is now underway. Correia is facing 24 counts of fraud, extortion, and bribery for crimes he allegedly committed before he was elected mayor and once he took office. Prosecutors say he defrauded people who invested in the app he was developing called SnoOwl and extorted marijuana vendors.
During opening statements, Assistant US Attorney Zachary Hafer told the jury this case is, quote, "about lying, cheating, stealing, and shakedowns." The defense argued that Correia wasn't hiding anything when spending SnoOwl money, arguing, quote, "It's his money from his point of view," unquote. Prosecutors are now calling their first witnesses.
