WATCH: Woman, juvenile arrested after speeding through red light, crashing carjacked SUV in Lynn

A woman and juvenile were taken into custody and one person was hurt Tuesday morning after a vehicle that was stolen in a suspected carjacking blew through a busy Lynn intersection and crashed into another car, causing it to flip over, officials said.

Leanna Rockwood, 22, of Boston, was arrested on charges including receiving a stolen motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, and possession of a Class B drug, while a juvenile male from Haverhill is charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violation, failure to stop or yield, leaving the scene of personal injury, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to the Lynn Police Department.

Lynn Police said this whole thing started at about 8 p.m. Monday night, when a man told police his Nissan was stolen at gunpoint by a man wearing a mask.

On just before 7:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, police said they spotted the stolen Nissan and tried to stop it.

And that’s when police said the driver sped away, crashing at Chestnut and Essex Streets, moments later.

“The suspect vehicle initially stopped then fled, leading officers on a brief pursuit, before striking another vehicle at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Essex Street,” the department wrote in a news release.

Rockwood and the juvenile allegedly ditched the wrecked SUV after the crash, fleeing on foot before being tracked down and taken into custody.

One person in the other SUV was taken to the hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of their injuries. A man who only wants to be referred to as a relative identified the innocent driver as 40-year-old Amber Fournier.

He said Fournier is a resident of Malden and a Lynn Public School teacher who was on her way to work.

He told Boston 25 News that the family wants their privacy as she recovers at the hospital.

The Lynn Public School District is not commenting on the accident at this time.

Video from the scene showed a white Honda SUV flipped on its roof in the middle of the roadway and the suspect vehicle, a black Nissan SUV with a crumpled hood, resting outside Tony Tipico Restaurant. Video surveillance recorded at the restaurant shows police chasing a suspect on foot on Chestnut Street, away from the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Honda was sent to an area hospital.

“All I heard was ‘Smash,’ and it woke me up, I jumped,” said local resident Virginia Mayo.

She lives in a fourth floor apartment over Mayas Market, where another video captured by a surveillance camera showed the moment the black SUV barreled through the red light at a high rate of speed and smashed directly into the side of the white SUV, causing it to veer off its course and overturn. Police are then seen quickly swarming the intersection.

“It was awful, terrible, I don’t wish that on nobody,” Mayo said. “It’s crazy. Nobody expected anything. Anything can happen at this corner, it always does.”

Tony Tipico’s also shared a video with Boston 25 that showed Lynn officers chasing after the suspects as they tried to get away.

Multiple Lynn police cruisers blocked off the neighborhood to traffic while detectives gathered evidence at the scene after the crash and motorists were urged to avoid the area during the height of the morning commute.

Hours after the crash, there’s still debris littering the parking lot in front of Tony Tipico Restaurant. The owner, Tony, says in his 11 years at this location, he’s seen a lot of crashes, but nothing like this.

“This is probably one of the craziest. There’s been accidents. It’s an intersection. There’s always accidents, not nothing like this,” said Tony Salcedo. “We still got a lot of cleaning up to do.”

Leanna Rockwood is due to be arraigned in Lynn District Court on Wednesday.

There were no additional details immediately available.
