Lynnhaven Panera Bread hosts fundraiser for 8-year-old shot in the head

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach community continues to rally for an 8-year-old boy who was shot in February.

On Feb. 13, Landyn Davis was playing a computer game in his parent’s bedroom when a bullet came through the wall and hit him in the head.

The boy was at home with his sister on Peele Court. Around 20 rounds of bullets were fired, according to police.

Landyn is recovering in the hospital. Three people were arrested and charged for the shooting.

The Lynnhaven Panera Bread hosted a fundraiser Friday for Landyn — organized by the Holland Elementary PTA. The fundraiser is one of several the PTA has put together for the boy and his family, with 25% of Panera’s Friday evening sales donated to the Davis family.

“Everybody came together do quickly on this and we have everybody coming to a meeting of the minds to find out what we can possibly do to step in and support the family,” said PTA president Justin Watson. “We’re going to be trying to do a bunch of different things in the community to try to help out.”

The PTA is also selling #LandynStrong wristbands for $2.

Joseph Atkins Jr. heard about the fundraiser and stopped by Panera to purchase eight wristbands.

“Saw it on the news, been following the story and it just touched my heart about Landyn and his family,” Atkins Jr. told 10 On Your Side. “Blessings to the Davis family, they’re in our prayers.”

As for the 8-year-old, we caught up with his parents, Emily Rigsby and Steven Davis, outside CHKD earlier this week. Landyn was moved out of the ICU this past Sunday.

“Because the bullet is still in his head, they couldn’t do an MRI to show the extent of the damage,” Rigsby said, “so it’s kind of like, they just have to let him show what he can do and he’s showing amazing progress. He’s definitely tough, he’s a warrior.”

On March 23, there will be a motorcycle ride at the Oceanfront at noon. Students at Landyn’s school, Holland Elementary, will do a Walk-A-Thon for him March 27.
