A&M-Corpus Christi initiative to create K-12 STEM, geospatial programs

A new Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi initiative aims to foster the next generation of land surveyors and geospatial scientists.

The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science announced Monday a $50,000 gift from the Port of Corpus Christi to help establish the Point of Beginning Initiative for K-12 career and technical education programs.

The initiative aims to develop a curriculum for high school students and develop training workshops for high school STEM educators, as well as geospatial camps for middle school teachers.

"We’ve seen a decline in the number of skilled professionals entering the geospatial and land surveying fields, and many high-paying jobs in Texas are going unfilled," CBI geospatial analyst Seneca Holland said in a press release. "We want to reverse this trend by working with educational and industry partners, like the Port of Corpus Christi, to create educational experiences for K-12 students that foster awareness of these fields and generate a skilled workforce for the future."

The institute works with data to predict the physical environment and support decision making, working with governmental entities and industry leaders.

The initiative aims to have a geospatial engineering and land surveying pathway approved by the Texas Education Agency across the state at the regional level by 2025.

It also aims to help establish dual credit agreements between school districts and four-year geospatial and surveying programs in the state, and develop an internship portal for students.
