M-E's Adam DeSantis, Tioga's Caden Bellis head small school all-state football teams

Co-Players of the Year in two classifications head Section 4’s representation on New York State Sports Writers Association Class B, C and D All-State football teams for 2022.

Both-way line stalwart Adam DeSantis of Maine-Endwell shares top billing in Class B, as does Tioga Central QB/DB Caden Bellis in Class D. Both are juniors from undefeated, repeat state champions.

Across the board in conventional, 11-player football, Section 4 accounts for 13 first-team selections. Co-Players of the Year notwithstanding, there are two in Class B, five in Class C and six in Class D.

DeSantis, widely acknowledged as the finest lineman in Section 4, is an OT/DE who a season ago celebrated a 12-1, state championship season with first-team acknowledgement on the offensive front. Bellis this season established program records for passing yards (1,509) and passing touchdowns (24). He has been at the offensive controls for 26 consecutive Tioga victories.

This marks a 10th consecutive season at least one Section 4 athlete has been identified as Player or Co-Player of the Year.

All-state teams are compiled by Steve Grandin, Saratoga Springs resident who formerly served as sports editor of The Saratogian, following consultation with an extensive network of media members statewide.

All-state teams in Classes AA and A are to be revealed Jan. 11.

First-teamers

Class B: A couple juniors hop significantly from a season ago.

Lineman Tanner Burlingame of Maine-Endwell was selected to the first-team defense, joined by linebacker Mason McCombs of Windsor − who fitted in 122 rushing yards per game. The former gained honorable mention last year, the latter fourth-team status.

Class C: Waverly, first-time Section 4 champion since 2015, scooped four of Section 4’s five nods.

Heading the group is senior Lucas Sickles of Chenango Forks, first-teamer on offense for a second consecutive season and again worthy on either side. Splashiest numbers guy of the pack is Waverly junior Joey Tomasso, who passed for 24 touchdowns and better than 2,200 yards.

That pair is accompanied on offense by Waverly teammates Jay Pipher, a junior end, and senior kicker Ryan Clark. The Wolverines’ Ty Beeman, a converted lineman, is a first-team linebacker.

Class D: Tioga’s Valentino Rossi, a junior end (27.1 yards per reception), and Tate McCauley, a sophomore lineman, share space on the first-team offense with lineman Luke Sanford, a senior from Delhi. Tigers linebacker Ousmane Duncanson and back Evan Sickler are first-team defenders with lineman Colby Phraner of Walton.
