On a historic night, Caitlin Clark had plenty of notable observers in attendance. Kristin Meyer is the head coach of girls basketball at Dowling Catholic high school in West Des Moines. For the first time ever, Meyer got the chance to see Clark play a regular season game in person.

Iowa associate head coach Jan Jensen surprised Meyer and her staff with eight tickets to witness history. Sure enough, Clark broke the all-time scoring record in front of her very eyes.

“It’s one of those things I’ve thought about a few times and I would have never predicted it,” Meyer said before the game. “Now on the other side, I’m not that surprised knowing her work ethic and how she loves a challenge, but it’s not something that I even thought about.”

Meyer claims she knew Clark was the best player she had ever coached or coached against early on.

“I think it’s just her consistency and how she keeps getting better. And the work she puts in and how dedicated she is, but also on the other side of it, how much fun she has. It hasn’t turned into a job that she has to do. She genuinely loves being on the court every time she gets to practice or play a game.”

But it’s been the impact across the sport that has impressed her the most.

‘For me, it’s the broad scope of the impact she’s having on the game,” Meyer said. “And how many eyes are now watching women’s basketball — how she’s impacting little boys and girls and how she’s a role model for so many people. For me, that’s even a bigger impact than just what she’s doing on the basketball court.”
