‘I’m thankful, I’m blessed’: Family reunited with man who tried to help during severe storms
As Cherryville’s clean-up efforts continue after the strong storms early in the week, a mom and her daughter were able to meet a good Samaritan who tried to help them when they needed it most.
Channel 9 brought you the scary scene on Tuesday night, speaking with the woman who was in her car with her daughter when a tree fell on top. Jason Day was on his way to pick up his daughter from a softball game when he came across the covered car. While trying to free Samantha Hartdige and her daughter, Day was thrown by strong winds.

On Wednesday, they reunited with the selfless man who risked his life to try and save theirs.
“For him to risk his life for me and my daughter, two people he has no clue who we are and never met, I’m thankful—I’m blessed he’s still here,” Hartdige said.
“I never made it to the car, but it’s a blessing to be able to see them and make sure they’re alright,” Day said.
“This is definitely a moment I know we won’t forget,” Hartidge said.
According to Gaston County Emergency Officials Day, she was the only person who reported getting hurt during the storms.
