'Maleficent' casts rare curse on Disney box office

In a rare miss for the studio, The Walt Disney Co. occupied the top spot at the weekend box office with "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil," but the fairy tale sequel flew far short of studio and industry expectations with an estimated $36 million in domestic ticket sales. "Mistress of Evil," starring Angelina Jolie, wasn't expected to match the $69 million start of its predecessor on its way to $759 million worldwide in 2014, but the follow-up film was forecast to open in the $45 million to $50 million range. The movie did better overseas, with an estimated $117 million, including $22 million from China for $153 million globally, but with a $185 million production budget before marketing, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" is looking at this point to break even.
