In my mind, the last two months are divided into three periods: Chinese New Year, Chengdu and Beijing. For instance, I recall that, even as we were asked not to leave the apartment complex in Chengdu, where I’d traveled to visit a friend, I could still hear a man regularly pedaling by outside on his pedicab, yelling, “Vegetables for sale.”
