Mac Jones acknowledges 2 places where he needs to be better

Mac Jones is back to the drawing board with the New England Patriots after yet another defeat. Though Jones had arguably his best game as a pro in Week 6, with an impressive PFF grade and a solid stat line (15/21, 229 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT), he identified two things that will go into his improvement journal, a notebook where he keeps track of the good and the bad from every game.

During an appearance on WEEI, Jones revealed what he intends to focus on improving after Week 6.

“Improving my feet and improving my communication with the offensive line just making sure we’re on the same page,” he said on sports radio. “I think my feet were a little out of whack and I can definitely improve that and I will with drills and all that stuff. Every week there’s things I do to improve on that.

“And communication, talking with the offensive line and making sure we’re on the same page. I think we did a good job of that, but that is something that needs to improve every week. I think we’ll do that in practice. They’ve done a good job all year protecting me. We’re getting better and better, so once we really have that full game the results will come. We just have to keep working.”

Jones’ footwork looked spotty after he took a brutal sack from Randy Gregory in the first half. Not only did the Patriots’ play-calling seem to shift after that strip-sack, but Jones’ mentality changed, too. He had issues with his footwork. Most notably, he didn’t set his feet for his final throw of the game, a third-down conversion attempt in overtime where he misfired on a back-shoulder target to receiver Nelson Agholor.

The Cowboys’ pressure was a product of poor offensive line play, but it’s important for a quarterback to set up his linemen for success with pre-snap protection setup. It seems Jones thinks that’s where he can also improve.
