MacArthur Memorial hosts remembrance event for 125th anniversary of Philippine-American War

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The MacArthur Memorial is partnering with the Filipino American National Historical Society and the Council of United Filipino Organizations of Tidewater to host a Philippine-American War Remembrance Event.

The event will mark the 125th anniversary of the Philippine-American war, a three-year war fought between American forces and Filipino nationalists, which resulted in the death of over 4,200 Americans and over 20,000 Filipinos.

A newly restored copy of Philippine General Emilio Aguinaldo’s 1899 declaration of independence, which is considered by the Virginia Association of Museums to be the one of the top ten endangered artifacts in Virginia, is set to be unveiled during the event.

Several presentations by a panel of international scholars are also scheduled for the event. The presentations aim to examine the war from the perspective of both the U.S. Army and the Filipino people.

The event will take place on Feb. 3 in the MacArthur Memorial Visitors Center. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and the event will begin at 10 a.m.

While the event is free and open to the public, registration is encouraged. To register, click the link here.
