Macedonia plans to erect new city monument signs

MACEDONIA – Several months down the road residents will see city identification/electronic message display monument signs spring up at three locations.

According to building commissioner Bob Rodic, the city engaged in a study with architectural adviser Pamela Schutz and architect/planning commission member Scott Wallenhorst to update signage placed at certain points in the city limits.

The design and details for the three signs were unveiled to the planning panel Sept. 19, and members provided positive feedback. “They are really nice signs, and I’m glad to see this,” said member Jason Roberts.

Rodic explained the signs will be of a consistent style and materials, and will display the city crest (30 inches in diameter) and mayor’s name on the front brick pillar face. They will vary in height depending upon the location.

The igns will be placed at the north entrance to Macedonia Commons (Route 82 and Macedonia Commons Boulevard), the south entrance to the Commons (Route 8 and Macedonia Commons Boulevard) and Routes 82 and 8.

Rodic said the monuments will include 4-by-8-foot dynamic display electronic message centers to the right of the pillars supported by a base matching them. The EMC will be used to post city-related, civic and public information.

City engineer Joe Gigliotti said the city hasn’t yet solicited quotes for the cost of the signs and noted “there still are a lot of steps to be taken before they are erected.”

He added it is possible utility poles will have to be relocated at two of the sites, but that hasn’t been determined yet. A curved brick wall with no verbiage at the southern end of the Commons likely will be removed to make way for that sign.

OTHER SIGN ACTION

Also on Sept. 19, the planning panel approved plans for new or replacement signs at five locations, and postponed action on plans for signage at one business.

A change to the monument sign at Gateway Plaza on East Aurora Road was favored. The sign currently displays four tenant panels – Burlington, Best Buy, Office Max and Petco – but that will increase to six when space is leased to two new tenants.

One of the new tenants will be T.J. Maxx, for which the panel also approved a wall sign over its portion of the Gateway Plaza building and a small blade sign under the canopy. Two column signs were eliminated from the original plans.

A new Target wall sign with logo measuring 132 square feet was OK’d, but two instructional signs totaling 58 square feet (stating “order pickup” and “drive-up”) must either be reduced in size or receive variance approval from the board of zoning appeals.

Approval was given to Studio Hoju, a tattoo parlor going into the Center Pointe Plaza on Valley View Road, for a 16.33-square-foot wall sign, window signage not exceeding 25 percent of its total glass area and a panel on the tenant monument sign.

The commission’s final approval was a sign change at Planet Fitness at Alexandria Square on East Aurora Road.

A 160-square-foot wall sign will have Planet Fitness on two lines totaling 6 feet high, with a 3 1/2-foot high logo to the left. The package also includes panels on two tenant monument signs at Crow Drive and Alexandria Way and along East Aurora Road.

Meanwhile, action was postponed on a sign package for The Wave car wash, which plans to locate to Route 8 and East Highland Road between KFC and the Key Inn. City planner Brian Frantz said the business is awaiting BZA variance decisions.
