Macon-Bibb tax assessment notices are out. What most homeowners can expect and why

Residents of Macon-Bibb County have recently received their annual property tax notices, and there’s good news.

Most taxpayers should pay less than they did last year, according to the Board of Tax Assessors.

Officials estimate for every $1,000 in property value someone has, the taxpayer could owe $5 less than they did last year.

The reduction will be the largest in recent years and follows another tax reduction last year.

The notices, which arrived in mailboxes last week, include information about the valuation of the property as well as an estimate of taxes owed using a five mill reduction in property tax, which will likely be passed this August by the Board of County Commissioners due to the Other Local Options Sales Tax that was passed in 2021.

When the tax digest is released later in the year, the millage rate could be reduced further depending on property values.

With the possible new millage rate, a property worth $250,000 would pay just over $3,200 during tax season.

Some properties in Macon have increased in value since last year’s tax season, so for those whose property values went up, the millage rate decrease would not be as much of a boon as for those who saw a stagnant property value. This has been the case for several years in Macon where lowered millage rates are met with rising property values.

Property owners have 45 days from the day the notice was sent out to make an appeal to the Tax Assessor’s Office for a lower property value appraisal. Instructions for how to appeal one’s tax assessment are on the form that have been mailed.
