This new Macon boutique has trendy vintage pieces and ‘a little funky’ clothes

An online clothing store opened its new storefront in Macon with the goal of having something for everybody.

The Vintage Thread opened its storefront at 3003 Vineville Ave. on Sept. 29. Abigail Johnson, owner, said the grand opening Friday and Saturday were a big hit.

“There’s something for everyone. I try to be as inclusive as possible with just body style and shape and the color of things and the patterns and just being funky, a little funky but still having the staple pieces,” she said.

The boutique offers a variety of women’s clothing with some men’s clothes and vintage items. Most of the store’s vintage pieces are graphic t-shirts, but Johnson, a Macon native, said she is working to expand their selection.

The men’s clothing section is limited to mostly men’s street wear, but Johnson said she plans to expand that as well.

“It’s just something Macon doesn’t offer, and men have nowhere to shop in Macon, bless their hearts, at least for like men’s streetwear. There’s just not a lot of places in Macon to shop. So I just kind of wanted to put that out there, give Macon something they don’t have,” she said.

The Vintage Thread is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

Opening a business at 23

Johnson, 23, attended Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia, and majored in business and psychology. While attending college, she worked at The Kinnebrew Co. in Americus.

“That was a really big inspiration and that kind of struck my drive to do it,” she said about developing her interest in selling clothes.

During her senior year at college, Johnson launched an online store to start selling clothes she would like to buy.

After college, she maintained the online store while working as a server at ‘Orleans on Carroll Street in Perry. She saved and waited for the day she would be able to open a storefront.

She came across the location on Vineville Avenue and fell in love with it.

Creating a store for Macon

Johnson likes to support local business and doesn’t like to shop at large department stores, but she has always struggled finding a store for her in Macon.

“There’s just no places I really like to shop,” she said. “If you asked my favorite place to shop in Macon, I couldn’t tell you.”

The location on Vineville Avenue was the former Bike Tech Macon location located between Layers, a bakery, and Magnolia Wynne Boutique, a children’s clothing store.

“I feel like it’s a good cohesive mix and just trying to like bring up small business on Vineville,” Johnson said.

The Vintage Thread has decent prices with a very good price margin as well as a wide range of trendy, fun clothes, Johnson said.

“Every time they shop, they support my dream,” Johnson said about customers coming to her store. “My goal is eventually to outgrow this building, and we’ll see how it goes.”
