Jared Quay & Matt Gothard discuss what is possible with the future of the Jaguars with Urban Meyer hired as the new head coach.

Video Transcript

MATT GOTHARD: Welcome back to "Mad Bets," everybody. We are talking coaching changes in the NFL. Urban Meyer is headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and we have former superfan of the Jacksonville Jaguars Jared Quay here to talk through future bats, what we think about the Jags. Are you rushing to bet on them to win the next Super Bowl?

[LAUGHTER]

JARED QUAY: Slow down there, buddy. I'm still a Jaguars fan. Duval! But I'm not in love with everybody being excited. I do love the fact they're getting attention. I don't know why there's buzz around college coaches becoming great NFL coaches. I don't know when that became a big thing. But Urban Meyer was a great coach at the college level. That doesn't necessarily mean he's going to translate to the NFL. And his biggest asset in college was that he was a great recruiter, which means nothing in the NFL. I mean, I guess he knows who to draft. But when you have the first overall draft pick, we all know who you're going to draft.

I just think that Jacksonville fans need to be patient with this. So if he goes the first three years, he's still getting top-five five draft picks, be patient. Trevor Lawrence is learning. Urban Meyer is learning. And I think, maybe, in year six or seven, we can start talking about Duval winning the championship, with the actual Super Bowl in Jacksonville. That's what I'm talking about.

MATT GOTHARD: All right. So maybe it's a little bit too soon to be thinking Super Bowl. What do you think about the AFC South? Could they be a contender soon in the AFC South?

JARED QUAY: The AFC South's got some dogs. The Jaguars are still competitive this year. I think Doug Marrone did a pretty good job with what he had. He made lemonade. And they were competitive in the majority of the games within their conference. I think the Texans may be falling down. But I still think the Colts are a strong team from top to bottom. They may lose Philip Rivers, but they were good without him. And then the Titans are a pretty solid team, even though they got beat by my Ravens last week. I still think they have a lot of core pieces to make them good. Give it four years, and I think Jacksonville should be the center of the AFC South division.

MATT GOTHARD: All right. Lastly, before I let you go, they filled the head coach position, they're probably going to fill the quarterback position. What is the next position that the Jaguars need to fill in order to become a contender?

JARED QUAY: They need to get Calais back. I think they have some good exterior defensive lineman, but they need good push in the front to stop the run. I think the run was really tough for them. So if they can get a solid, just an Alabama, LSU nose tackle that could just plug up the one-gap and make sure that nobody runs through the middle, that's what I think they could use to really help out their defense.

MATT GOTHARD: All right. That train is never late. Jared, thanks so much, man. Good luck this weekend.
