The auction of The Herald-Times print archive has begun. Volunteers spent about three weeks looking through the books to identify key moments in history. To make it easier to see what's inside the books, we're publishing lists of what they found. They did not have time to look in every book. This list covers 1980 to 1989.

Key content: Steven Judy convicted of murdering Indiana woman and her three children, gets death sentence; arrest made in Kathy Sanford killing; IU basketball star Mike Woodson returns to action after back injury; “Breaking Away” gets Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

1983 March, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: Feature story on John Cougar (Mellencamp). IU women’s basketball team is regular season co-champion of Big Ten conference, reaches NCAA tournament and wins first game but falls in regional semifinal; IU men reach NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to Kentucky.

1983 September, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed, loose pages. Key content: Former IU football player Denver Smith shot to death in struggle with city police, Sept. 12 and 13.

1983 November, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed, few loose pages. Key content: Tomilea Allison becomes first woman elected mayor of Bloomington.

1984 September, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: School bus accident injures 16; U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig discusses U.S.-Soviet relations during talk at IU.

1984 October, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed, few loose pages. Key content: Neal's Dump proposed for Superfund cleanup of PCBs; Phyllis Schlafly and Sarah Weddington address women's rights in debate on IU campus; city and Westinghouse reach agreement for cleanup of PCBs; fraternity house hit by arson; rescuers bring caver to surface after fall.

1984 November, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: Ronald Reagan re-elected president, 8th District Congressional race between U.S. Rep. Frank McCloskey and Richard McIntyre so close it later led to two recounts and a congressional vote to eventually seat McCloskey.

1985 June, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: Glendon Wininger found guilty of killing Steven Detmer with bowling ball; back end of Princess Theater collapses; President Ronald Reagan visits Mooresville.

1985 July, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: Padamaran founder defends commune after Nazi fire.

1985 Aug.1-15, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: Aug. 29, Gene Hackman to star in “Hoosiers” film written and produced by Bloomington native and IU grad Angelo Pizzo and directed by IU grad David Anspaugh.

1985 Aug. 16-31, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: “Consent decree” signed between the state, county and city with Westinghouse to clean up six PCB-contaminated sites in Monroe and Owen counties. Plan also calls for construction of incinerator to burn contaminated materials.

1985 September, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: "Hoosiers" to film scenes at Nineveh school, Bloomington people audition for small roles, "extra" spots in film; IU fans tear down Memorial Stadium goalpost after coach Bill Mallory's Hoosiers beat Louisville, 41-28 ; Mike Andrews gets 111 days for election protest; story on new Herald-Telephone press.

1985 October, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed. Key content: FBI investigating IU Foundation; Ray Charles' plane crashes in Monroe County; X-rated movies on IU campus at issue; former Monroe County jail to be sold to local arts group; election protester Mike Andrews gives jail house interview.

1985 Nov. 1-15, The Herald-Telephone − Yellowed, some water damage. Key content: Tomi Allison re-elected mayor of Bloomington. IU rejects South Africa divestment; President Reagan picks former Indiana Gov. Otis Bowen for cabinet post; Bob Zaltsberg named Herald-Telephone editor.

Key content: Washington Post reporter John Feinstein following IU men's basketball team, coach Bob Knight this season for planned book ("A Season on the Brink"; IU basketball star Steve Alford suspended for Kentucky game after his photo appeared in a sorority's fund-raising calendar; H-T photographer Larry Crewell goes retro in "extra" role in "Hoosiers"; GE, RCA agree to merger under GE name.
