Madeleine McCann Netflix documentary will "fuel conspiracy theorists", say Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman
Netflix's controversial documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann launches today (March 15), with eight episodes landing on the streaming platform.
Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesperson Clarence Mitchell has now appeared on This Morning to reveal how Madeleine's parents feel about the new series.
Eamonn Holmes said that the show – directed by Chris Smith, who was behind the recent Fyre documentary – runs the risk of "feeding the frenzy".
"There will be a lot of people sitting at home, conspiracy theorists who are shouting at the screen saying, 'We know who did this and we know what's involved'," the presenter said.
"From this controversial entertainment documentary, there could be a worry that Kate and Gerry will be dragged into this again in some way."
Mitchell argued: "This fuels those conspiracy theorists, there's whole websites and forums dedicated to vilifying them and others around them, myself included.
"It's nonsense. If the allegations that have been disproven and discounted are aired again, I’m afraid it will fuel that. Kate and Gerry ignore all of that."
He went on to speak about what the family believe has happened to Madeleine, who was 3 years old when she went missing 12 years ago.
"They have always believed that in the absence of any definitive evidence to suggest that the worst has happened, that she could still be alive and that's what keeps them going to this day," he explained.
"There is no evidence that she's come to any physical harm whatsoever and until somebody absolutely sits them down and says they have the worst possible news for them, and the evidence, then they have to keep going."
