Apr. 2—On Thursday, the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Richmond Police Department performed a routine drug sweep at Madison Central High School.

According to Madison County Schools Community Education Director Erin Stewart, no drugs were found during the sweep.

Stewart said the school system works with local law enforcement to perform periodic sweeps and likened the activity to a tornado drill.

"It's basically kind of a routine thing that we do a couple of times a year," Stewart said. "They just come through the building with the dogs, it's not really any specific reason for it to happen... It's almost like a tornado drill."

A representative from the sheriff's office said that they're primary objective with the sweeps is to provide the K9 units which detect drugs. Stewart noted, as much as it is a way for the school to stay on its toes; it is also a good training exercise for the dogs.

"This is something we've been doing for awhile. It serves multiple purposes. It just keeps everything in check, it's random but it is routine," Stewart said.
