Madison County Schools get budget season underway

Jan. 26—Budget season is getting underway throughout much of the county, as the Madison County Board of Education took a look at their current working budget as well as the first draft of the 24-25 fiscal year budget.

The board started by amending the working budget for the current fiscal year of 2023-2024. The total budget with the amending done sits at over $135 million which the board unanimously approved.

Then the board the moved onto the first draft of 2024-2025's fiscal year.

Mark Woods, Madison County Schools Chief Financial Officer presented the first draft budget for the 24-25 fiscal year.

Woods noted that a couple of things will going away for the next fiscal year. One of those will be CSEPP.

"We have to take that out of our line item, because there would be no more in lease for the busses," Woods said.

Board member Lori Cobb asked if the busses could be surplused to recoup some of the money that will inevitably be lost, to which Woods said yes.

"We'll be able to surplus [the busses] if the board chooses to do so," he said.

The other thing that the district is projecting in the first draft for the next budget is dipping into the contingency fund to the tune $4.65 million. Much of that has to do with lost funding from other areas in the budget from this year to next year.

This was the first of three budget sessions for the Board for the 2024 calendar year with two more set to take place on May 23 and September 26. Both meetings will take place at 6 p.m. at the Madison County Schools central office on Highland Park Dr.

This next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 8. You can watch the meeting live as well as the replays of previous board meetings on the Madison County Schools Facebook page.
