The Madison Board of Education Wednesday night approved a new tentative contract agreement contract between the Madison Local Education Association and Madison Local Schools.

The new three-year contract has a retroactive start date of Aug. 1, 2021, and is in effect until July 31, 2024.

Madison Superintendent Rob Petersen said Thursday, "We're very excited to come to an agreement with MLEA and I want to compliment every individual on both sides. It was a long and difficult process at times and I'm happy we came to an agreement."

What does the new contract call for?

In the new contract, teachers will receive each year of the contract a 2% increase in their salary and also a 1% stipend on their salary for each of the three years, Mike Leeper, association president, said Thursday.

Both parties began meeting in May 2021 and 21 meetings were held regarding the contract, Leeper said.

"I'm thankful we have a collective bargaining system. Madison is a great community with an excellent staff," Leeper said.

"I'm just relieved were able to get a decent contract for them," Leeper said.

The MLEA represents 231 members.

The board met Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Madison Comprehensive High School library.

Association members voted to approve the terms of the agreement on Tuesday night.
