Madison Township: Program slated to inform military veterans about VA death benefits

Apr. 5—Military veterans are invited to attend a seminar in Madison Township to learn more about death benefits offered through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The event is slated for 6 p.m. May 25 at Mulholland Hall, located behind Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 2846 Hubbard Road.

American Legion Jay Wilson Post 112 of Madison will host the event, which is free of charge, in conjunction with Perry American Legion Post 697.

Veterans will learn what they should do now, and what their families will need to request VA benefits, including funeral benefits, following a veteran's death.

In fact, each veteran who attends the program is encouraged to bring along a spouse and/or other family member who eventually might make funeral arrangements.

Topics to be covered during the seminar will include VA death benefits such as military honors at a funeral; burial allowances; and gravesite military headstone and marker options.

The audience will hear from three speakers: a representative of the American Legion; a funeral director from a local funeral home; and a veterans service officer from the Lake County Veterans Service Commission.

Each veteran will receive a packet to take home that is filled with brochures, contact information and all forms that a family will need after a veteran dies.

Space at the event is limited and anyone desiring to attend is asked to RSVP by May 15.

Reservations can be made by calling American Jay Wilson Post 112 at 440-428-7893 between noon and 8 p.m.

Last year, three similar seminars focusing on VA death benefits were conducted in Perry Township by Perry American Legion Post 697. All of these programs were well attended and received positive reviews, said Post 697 Commander Tom Anderson.
