Madonna announced on Monday night that she would be postponing yesterday's residency show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

It comes as the 61-year-old sustained a knee injury as she undergoes her 92-date run of the Madame X Tour.

A statement released to the pop icon’s website read: "Unfortunately, Madonna’s Madame X concert this evening at BAM Howard Gilman Opera House is postponed. Madonna is currently dealing with a knee injury and has been advised rest for the next three days to assist in her recovery.

It also stated that her concerts on Thursday, 10 October and Saturday, 12 October were expected to proceed as scheduled.

Meanwhile, Madonna informed her fans about her injury via Instagram.

Sharing a snap of herself on stage, Madonna wrote: "Its Hard for Madame X to admit that she is also a human being made of flesh and blood and she must rest for the next 3 days to insure full recovery for her knee.

"I am not a quitter. This hurts me more than you can imagine. Its time to take those heels and fishnets off for a few days! Thank you for your understanding. See you very soon !! #recovery #madamextheatre #nevergiveup #ongod."

Last week saw further alterations to her tour dates made as it was announced her 15 October date at the Chicago Theatre would be moving to 28 October.

A 31 October performance at the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco was also moved to 5 November, however, no reason for the changes was stated.

As the tour kicked off last month, it was reported that concert-goers would be banned from using their phones.

Mobiles were locked away in 'Yondr' cases that would only open in certain areas throughout the duration of the concert.
