Mae Martin On Sharing This Intimate Detail In Their New Comedy Special

Mae Martin celebrated the release of their debut comedy special SAP with Netflix last night at the Tudum theater.

The streaming service assembled some of our favorite comics for a night of laughter: Meg Stalter soaked up the love from her adoring fans and definitely-not-imaginary boyfriend, Sabrina Jalees pointed out why some abortion clinics probably should be shut down, Joel Kim Booster explained how his white boyfriend has some Asian DNA in him (he's the bottom), and Nori Reed joked about being trans-rich. Natalie Morales, Sophia Bush, Zackary Drucker, Brett Goldstein, Sarah Catherine Hook, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Ashlee Marie Preston were also in attendance.

At the set's conclusion, Martin sat down with Broad City star and the director of SAP, Abbi Jacobson, for a quick chat about their friendship and the vibes were... weird (in a good way). Martin, who came out as nonbinary in 2021 and goes by they/them pronouns, also shared how vulnerable and scary it was to be open about their top surgery and journey with gender. Martin almost didn't talk about it in the special at all.

"Sometimes I think it's more of a statement not to talk about it because it's not a huge part of my day-to-day, it's not the most important thing about me. Maybe it'd be cooler not to. But then in the current climate, it felt important to talk about."

Jacobson agreed, "I think it is very important to talk about."

SAP premiered yesterday and is already garnering headlines for Martin's call-out of fellow comedian Dave Chappelle for his anti-trans rhetoric in some of his recent specials. They shared why they felt the need to name Chappelle in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.

“I feel confident about what I’m saying, so I might as well just name them,” said Martin. “It’s easy to dismiss queer people as being constantly up in arms about something. But with the legislation, we’re seeing such terrifying real-life consequences.
