The Orlando Magic announced Tuesday that veteran guard Michael Carter-Williams will miss the start of the upcoming regular season after undergoing surgery Monday on his left ankle to remove a bone fragment and to repair a ligament. The Magic press release stated that his “return to basketball activities will depend on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation,” but added he is “expected to make a full recovery.”

Williams apparently started having some pain in the ankle recently and upon further evaluation, the bone fragment was discovered. Magic officials, however, would not confirm the reason for the late surgery nor the timetable for the injury. The injury is not likely from anything Carter-Williams did last season.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pound Carter-Williams, who joined the Magic three seasons ago in March of 2019 as a free agent, played in 31 games (25 starts) last season, averaging 8.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He also averaged 25.8 minutes.

Carter-Williams has played in 88 games (25 starts) with Orlando, averaging 7.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Other Wagner signs deal

The Magic agreed to terms on a new deal to sign free agent forward/center Mo Wagner on Monday, officially making him teammates with his younger brother Franz Wagner, who was drafted No. 8 in the recent NBA Draft. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 6-foot-11 forward/center Mo Wagner played in 45 games (24 starts) last season with Washington, Boston, and Orlando, averaging 6.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. He signed as a free agent with the Magic on April 27 and played in 11 games (10 starts) with Orlando, averaging 11 points and 4.9 rebounds in 26 minutes per game.

He was originally selected in the first round (25th overall) of the 2018 NBA Draft by the L.A. Lakers.

Both Wagners played college ball at Michigan. Mo Wagner recently played for Germany during the Olympics in Tokyo. His younger brother, Franz, was selected by Orlando with the eighth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Franz played with the Magic in the NBA’s Summer League during the Olympics.
