Magical show coming to Boys & Girls Club; donations surpass $10,000

LAFAYETTE, Ind. − An upcoming spring show and two large donations were on the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club Board's agenda Wednesday afternoon.

Donations totaling 11,381

A $1,000 donation from Blue Fox HVAC and a $10,381 from Summit Financial Group resulted in over $11,000 being donated to the Lyn Treece Center.

"It's an awesome resource for us to have funding in our general operating account," Barry Richard, executive director of the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club of Tippecanoe County, said. "This goes to the academic support, the physical education - the Triple Play Program - the staffing, some of the food that we are able to serve the children, the arts and crafts programs. It goes to so many of the areas that we work on continuously, day in and day out, to help us support the resources."

Summit Financial Group also shared a video during the board meeting announcing the company's Christmas Initiative with the Club. This video is sent to Summit Financial Group's 300+ clients in hopes that they join in on the fundraising efforts toward the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club.

Sometime in April or May of this year, the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club will host their annual event "Believe: A Great Future Begins Today" at New Journey Farms.

This event is meant to recognize the children and staff members that make up the Boys and Girls Club along with the vital sponsors of the organization.

"We'll start out by welcoming everybody there," Richard said. "And then we will go into our dinner phase to have our meal. And then we will do our entertainment (portion) and a speaker for the event. Then we will go into recognizing the children, potentially some of the supporters or contributors to us - and then also potentially some staff members."

The aforementioned entertainment will partially be provided by Robert "Bob" Poynter, who will provide a 30-minute magic show fun for all ages.

"(Poynter's bag of props) is what I bring along when I perform for mostly children," Poynter said. "And the adults all sit in the back row saying, 'Don't let him fool you,' and then the adults (after the show) will say, 'How did he do that?'"

Poynter performs a variety of prop magic tricks featuring handkerchiefs, "magic coloring books" and ropes. At the board meeting, Poynter demonstrated one of these tricks where a red handkerchief is turned to white and then red again, while also making one handkerchief disappear and reappear. This trick was assisted in-part by Richard himself who, after Poynter completed his trick, asked if he could perform one of his own.

Richard then took a dollar bill from the meeting table, folded it in half and asked if the meeting participants knew what George Washington kept in his pocket. From the folded dollar bill, Richard pulled the recently missed red handkerchief from Poynter's previous trick.

The "Believe" event does not have a set date, but will take place on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday in April or May of this year from 5-7 p.m.

Also part of the entertainment portion of that event will include a motivational speech from a yet-to-be-determined guest speaker. Different sponsorship tiers are available for anyone interesting in giving back to Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club for the "Believe" event. The following are the tiers:

  • Bronze, $1,000

  • Silver, $1,500

  • Gold, $2,500

  • Platinum, $5,000

Table sponsors for the event are $1,200 each while individual tickets are $150 each.
