Magna Mirrors opens Duncan plant, to supply BMW, other automakers with 1.6M mirrors a year

Magna International opened the doors Thursday to its new 170,000-square-foot mirror manufacturing facility in Duncan that will employ roughly 255 workers.

Magna Mirrors will produce high-tech exterior mirror systems for automotive customers including BMW, Mercedes and Volvo.

A grand opening was held Thursday, attended by Gov. Henry McMaster and Magna CEO Swamy Kotagiri and hundreds of guests and employees.

The company, a division of Ontario, Canada-based Magna International, plans to grow its workforce to 400 by 2028, said Matthias Steck, general manager of Magna Mirrors North America South Carolina Division.

Magna Mirrors marks the sixth Magna facility in South Carolina, employing more than 2,400 workers statewide.

It also marks the second Magna facility in Spartanburg County. Magna Seating is located in the nearby Tyger River Industrial Park in Moore.

"They are great corporate citizens," said Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt, chairman of the county's economic development committee. "We're very fortunate to have them here. I've been nothing but impressed with the level of their associates."

After remarks by Steck, Kotageri and plant general manager Steve Salvatore, Magna employees gave guests a tour of the facility.

"Magna continues to grow their footprint in South Carolina, and today's grand opening of their newest facility is further proof that South Carolina is an ideal location for companies to find sustained success," McMaster said.

The plant will be able to produce about 1.6 million mirrors a year. The facility has several amenities, including a wellness room, fitness center, canteen with patio and gaming area, vegetable garden and a solar-lit walking trail.

Magna opened Magna Seating in Moore in 2017, with 480 jobs. The 230,000-square-foot facility makes seats for BMW X models at the German automaker’s assembly plant in Spartanburg County.

In 2018, Magna Seating announced an $8 million expansion with 130 new jobs at the seat manufacturing plant.

Ground for the new Magna Mirrors facility was broken last May, and operations began in early January.
