Magruder Auxiliary hosts celebratory meeting, volunteer recognition

PORT CLINTON − On April 21, Magruder Hospital Auxiliary hosted its Celebratory Meeting and Volunteer Recognition. The 62 attendees were served a lunch prepared by the Fulton Street Café and served by Magruder staff members. Forty-four volunteers were presented with recognition pins for their cumulative hours of service ranging from 100-4,000 hours. In 2022, the volunteers gave 8,623 hours of service.

The auxiliary was treated to a photo slide show, custom chocolates from CoCo Beans and a keynote presentation from Maury Hall about his travels on the Appalachian Trail. The auxiliary announced a $12,000 donation to the hospital as well as $12,000 to be awarded for health care scholarships this year.

Valley View receives customer service award

FREMONT − Valley View Health Campus, a Trilogy Health Services senior living community, was honored with an award for outstanding customer service during the company’s annual spring meeting held in Louisville, Kentucky.

By placing residents and families first, Valley View Health Campus exceeded the expectations of the people it serves, earning the President’s Diamond Service Award. The honor recognizes Trilogy communities that scored in the company’s top 6-30 percent based on customer service surveys.

Twice a year Trilogy solicits feedback from the residents and families it serves. Valley View earned a score of 4.8230 out of five from feedback in categories including staff attitude, quality of care, food quality, activity programming, appearance and cleanliness.

“We are committed to delivering not only quality, clinical care but also a first-class level of hospitality to the senior lifestyle. Our scores on the Customer Satisfaction Survey represent our team’s dedication to servant leadership, and it is with great pride that we receive this recognition,” Nanci Kosanka, executive director said.

Bellevue Society for the Arts to hold 'Mary Poppins' auditions

BELLEVUE − Bellevue Society for the Arts’ Teen Theatre will hold auditions for Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s "Mary Poppins" 6-9 p.m. May 15 and 16 at 205 Maple St.

"Mary Poppins" will be directed by Leslie Childers. Caroline Guy serves as assistant director and choreographer. Ivy McElfresh will assist with choreography. The show is sponsored by Bellevue Kiwanis and Lions clubs and Huron County Community Foundation.

People who audition will be asked to prepare one verse of a song, preferably from the show and the character for which they are auditioning. Wear comfortable shoes as a portion of the audition will involve dance. There will be cold reads from the script. Callbacks are likely.

Production dates are July 14-16 and 21-22.

Port Clinton School District receives National Recognition five years in a row

PORT CLINTON − For the 50th year in a row, Port Clinton has received a Best Communities for Music Education Award from the National Association of Music Merchants.

According to the NAMM Foundation, “The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.”

Even with restrictions due to the pandemic, Port Clinton City Schools kept the music playing last year and welcomed back audiences to the PCHS Performing Arts Center.

Music education is immersed in the Port Clinton School District curriculum starting in kindergarten, and successful due to sequencing at each level by each faculty member having ownership of their role. The elementary music teachers are the “fire starters” to peak interest and teach music foundations of music to prepare for middle school.  In middle school, students select instruments and faculty prepares them for high school music classes. Bell choir and Show Choir start at the elementary level.

Port Clinton is the only school district in Ottawa County to offer all three music programs − band, choir and orchestra. Music educators are Kathy Miller, Toby Farrell, Jennifer Barringer, Sean DeLong, Adam Murray and Bruno Bush. See more about the Port Clinton City School District music programs and look for the upcoming concerts and events at www.pccsd.net.
