SINGAPORE — A 49-year-old maid was charged on Saturday (30 April) with murdering a 73-year-old man in Bishan.

CNA reported that Sumiyati, who goes by one name, appeared in the State Courts via video link from remand, and followed court proceedings through a Bahasa Indonesia interpreter.

She allegedly murdered Low Hoon Cheong on Thursday between 4pm and 8.45pm. The murder purportedly took place at an eighth floor unit at Block 222 Bishan Street 23.

Police were alerted at 8.50pm on Thursday, and found the man lying motionless inside the unit upon their arrival. The man was later pronounced dead by paramedics.

The maid, who was employed by the man’s household, was then arrested.

The prosecution applied for Sumiyati to be remanded for psychiatric observation, and she will return to court next month. She nodded to show that she understood the proceedings and did not ask any questions.

Any person who is convicted of murder could face the death penalty.
