These days, smartphones and digital cameras let us effortlessly capture the present through photos, videos, voice recordings, and more. In just a few seconds, we can send our precious moments to our iCloud, or even just post to Facebook, creating a safe storage place for digital snippets to live.

It wasn't always that easy though. While I may be a millennial, I even have my fair share of photo albums and old shoe boxes filled with snaps from elementary school field trips, birthday parties, and family gatherings. While I full-heartedly feel it's way more sentimental to page through old photo albums, rather than clicking through a slideshow on a computer, I fear all the things that could happen to these precious moments over the years. The photos or tapes could get lost, or suffer water damage. Not to mention the fact that photos start to fade throughout the decades and VHS tapes are basically obsolete at this point. While I vow to hold onto my photos as long as I can, I do like the idea of knowing that I can back each one up. That's where Legacybox comes in.

Legacybox is a mail-in service that takes all your old tapes, film, photos, audio recordings and digitizes them. It works like this: once you've paid for the service, you'll receive a box in the mail to place your analog media in. Once packed, you head to your local UPS store to drop off the box—Legacybox exclusively works with UPS and your shipping label will pre-paid. While you wait for your Legacybox to ship back your original momentos, along with the digitized moments now saved on thumb drive, the cloud, or DVD, you'll be able to track your memorabilia and package throughout the process. Expect a four to six week wait. As Legacybox writes on its site "We've combined the experience of the past, with the technology of today, to make it easy and safe."

Digitizing media doesn't come cheap though. The lowest price point is $60, which will cover any two forms of analog media, whether its a photo or video. The next price point is $280 for 10 items... and goes up to 40 items for $1,100. With that being said, you probably won't be sending entire albums in your Legacybox, however, this is a great service for a few select memories that you want to be passed down in your family forever—think of your wedding photos! You can check Legacybox's deal page for special promotions as well.
