A few months after moving into the new Greene County Jail, inmates are going to be experiencing another big change, the Greene County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.

Inmate mail at the Greene County Jail is going digital beginning Aug. 29, according to the sheriff's office.

The move was prompted by limitations due to COVID-19, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office said.

"Due to Covid-19, limitations had to be made regarding our mail system," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "With the new process, staff no longer have to handle mail that is contaminated by a controlled substance. It is safer for our staff, facility and inmates."

The move to a digital mail system has been in the works for a while.

"The 'digital switch' has been an ever-evolving process that started several months ago. Currently, the Greene County Jail only accepts postcards. Photos can be sent digitally and viewed on the tablets," the sheriff's office said.

Those interested in sending mail to someone being housed at the Greene County Jail will now send it to a P.O. box in San Antonio, Texas, where it will be scanned by IC Solutions and transmitted to inmate tablets at the jail in Greene County.

However, legal mail and sending inmates books will still follow the same process as it always has.
