Mail pickup is ending at this Topeka post office. Here's what you need to know.

Residents will no longer be able to pick up their mail at a southwest Topeka post office, starting next month.

Signage posted at the Sherwood Mail Carrier Annex at 6120 S.W. 29th St. tells customers that they will have to go to the post office at Gage Center, located at 1430 S.W. Woodhull St., to pick up their mail, starting Aug. 26.

The move comes after the Sherwood Annex stopped selling postage in recent months. It is unclear whether those changes will be permanent.

Mark Inglett, a spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, did not answer as to why the decision was made but instead referred The Capital-Journal to a series of facts about larger operational changes underway in the postal service.

Topeka is one of the first locations in the country to participate in that new model, dubbed sorting and delivery centers. These facilities are designed to consolidate operations from local post offices to a centralized facility, with an expectation that customers won't notice much of a difference.

It is unclear if the move at the Sherwood Annex is a direct consequence of the move to a sorting and delivery center.

The new plan would no longer send mail carriers to a local post office to pick up mail but rather to the center, which in Topeka is located on N.W. Gage Boulevard. USPS has maintained that no post offices will close as a result of the move.

A public notice is posted on the windows to the Sherwood Carrier Annex informing customers that pickup will soon move to the Gage Center Post Office.

The move at the Sherwood Annex also comes amid disruption at the downtown Topeka post office. The USPS abruptly halted its services there in late May and informed customers they would need to go to the N.W. Gage Boulevard office for services.

There isn't yet an official plan for the downtown post office location, with its future uncertain. USPS has said it soon will hold a meeting to examine possible options and gather community feedback.
