On greatest games in Ohio State football history

To the editor: I completely agree with the recent list of great OSU wins in Ohio Stadium. However, the greatest games in the Horseshoe must include losses.

Few Buckeyes today remember the 1935 “Game of the Century” wherein Notre Dame won 18-13 after being behind most of the game. However, many Buckeyes today can recall the thrill of the comeback and the pain of the loss following Uwe von Schamann’s field goal with 3 seconds to go in 1977.

Oklahoma 29, Ohio State 28.

As I sat stunned, along with 86,000 other Buckeye fans, coaches and players, I still realized I had watched one of the greatest games ever in Ohio Stadium.

Tommy O’Shaughnessy, Upper Arlington

To Tommy: And there are more, such as John Elway's guiding of Stanford to a thrilling win in 1982. And Vince Young and Texas in 2005. And Michigan State's stadium-quieting victories in 1998 and 2015.

On Nick Chubb and the Cleveland Browns

Dear Mr. White: Based solely on visual inspection, I’ve felt for a couple of years that Nick Chubb is the best player in the NFL, so kudos to Mr. Arace for supplying some sound numerical evidence to make me feel smart. Sadly, the term most associated with the running back position is devalued, and Colin Cowherd assures us daily that every high school kid in America aspires to be a quarterback or wide receiver. Despite having some high-caliber teammates, I share Mr. Arace’s concern that Chubb could end up like Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson and Adrian Peterson as a fabulous running back who never sniffed a championship. Right now, someone in Nashville could be writing this letter and substituting the name Derrick Henry.

Jon Armstrong, Columbus

To Jon: I'm not sure he's the best player in the NFL, but he's a great back and great teammate who had the misfortune of being drafted by a dysfunctional franchise.

On the Columbus Crew

To the editor: In the sports section of The Columbus Dispatch on Oct. 13, there is a photo of Crew owners Jimmy Haslam and JW Johnson talking to president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko. It appears that Mr. Haslam is engaged in conversation with Mr. Bezbatchenko while JW Johnson is a bit distracted on his cell phone as he transfers $20 from the Columbus Crew checking account to the City of Columbus checking account. The Crew owed $10 for the Lower.com Filed lease and $10 for the team's practice facility.

To the editor: Tribe went the distance,

plenty o' peanuts n' Cracker Jack.

But New York's got the ways & means

& it's 1-2-3 strikes your out.

On the stands the

hometown scatters

for the turnstiles.

So be proud of

Chief Wahoo,

all those years he spent swinging the bat.

We love the tribe,

our Guardian Angels!

Wave that flag,

wave it wide & high!

On ticket prices

To Brian: I saved ticket stubs from the many events I've been to over the years which bring back so many memories and thought about how modern technology makes that something of the past now. I see I watched an MLB game over 60 years ago for 75 cents, and tickets for a huge game in the Horseshoe vs Oklahoma in 1977 cost $7. And I remember people outside the Superdome offering $10 for ticket stubs after the 2008 Sugar Bowl national championship game vs. LSU, but I still have mine.

On Bruce Sutter

To the editor: I am saddened over the passing of Bruce Sutter. He was a dominant pitcher and member of the 1982 World Series champions Cardinals. He also played with the Cubs and Braves. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
