On putting a sponsor's name on Ohio Stadium's field

Dear Mr. White: The Buckeye Battle Cry, reimagined by Gene Smith’s greed:

Drive! Drive on down the Safelite field,Men of the scarlet and gray;Don’t let them thru the line, until we make them pay;Come on Corporations pony up more dough,Our coffers depend on selling our soul for O-hi-o!!

Phil Harrell, Dublin

To Phil: College football is a bigger business than ever, and this, I'm afraid, is just the beginning. And what else can we expect when the student-athlete quarterback is giving each teammate $500 to buy a suit?

On Deshaun Watson

To the editor: DeShaun Watson has been accused by more than 20 women of inappropriate sexual behavior. He has not been indicted, paid them millions of dollars for their silence and offered no apology. He is heavily criticized, as are the owners of the Browns for hiring him. Many Browns fans have stated that they are outraged and finished as fans. In 2016, America elected a man who has been accused by more than 20 women of inappropriate sexual behavior. He was not indicted, paid his victims for their silence, offered no apology and was recorded bragging about his behavior. He is a champion, a demigod to many, Watson is a heel.  Hum?

Dave Schwendenman, Columbus

To Dave: ... And Trump enters the sports pages. Was hoping that would never happen.

Dear Mr. White: I know everyone will always have something to say about the whole Watson circumstance, even the outcome. I don't know if he did or didn't do it, but what I do know is God does restore. Many of your readers talk about him saying he didn’t do anything wrong but that he paid all the lawsuits, but no one talks about all the women having the same exact story word for word. What I would say is instead of beating him down, let's begin to pray for all parties involved. I truly believe we all can learn something from all of this. We beat down Watson, but no one stopped supporting New England when the owner was caught in a sex trafficking case. We have to really be careful how and who we choose too attack. Again, let's pray instead of persecution.

Prophet Marlon Goldie Griffin

To the editor: This article (Did Deshaun Watson suspension make for a Cleveland Browns week unlike any other?) was awesome but the list could have been even longer:

  • Tim Couch #1 pick and bust

  • Don Rogers' death

  • Kevin Mack arrested for cocaine

  • "The Fumble"

  • "The Drive"

  • Trading Paul Warfield for Mike Phipps

Jim Durham

On Eddie George's son

To the editor: Our hearts go out to Eriq George, whose father will not let him apply to the University of Michigan. We have always believed that one of the great axioms of American life is for parents to hope that their children will do better than they have.

On college football playoffs

To Brian: Surely if it were ever to happen that Alabama were to be scheduled to play the Buckeyes in a December playoff game in Columbus, Gene Smith really wouldn't move that game to Indianapolis, would he? Keep that game in Columbus, preferably at night.

Dennis Singleton, Dayton

To Dennis: Unfortunately for Ohio State fans, Alabama haters and for all who like to watch frozen games on TV, yes, Smith has said he'd request to use the dome in Indianapolis for a home playoff game. “Anybody that's played on a frozen field, you don't want to do that to them,” he said. Coach Ryan Day agreed, sort of. "Certainly, we'd love to host the University of Miami on December 13 in the Horseshoe and 20-degree weather," Day said. "But I'm not sure that's the best experience for our student-athletes. I don't know. Those are things to be worked out.”

On TV sports announcers

To Brian: I’d like to introduce a new topic: Sports announcers who never shut up, which is most of them.

Specifically, NBC’s Tour Championship team of Dan Hicks, Paul Azinger, and Mike Tirico never stopped talking throughout all of the TC tournaments. Are they paid by the word? Are they just maximizing their paychecks while assaulting the listeners with nonstop nonsense about the players and their kids, their wives, their houses, their allegiances, their ages, their heights and other constant filler? It’s golf, for heaven’s sake! It’s supposed to be a quiet sport! The constant back-and-forth between Hicks and Azinger forced me to watch with the sound muted most of the time.

I hope technology will someday allow us to turn off all announcers and just listen to the crowd noise of sporting events.
