Main Street Wooster hosts utility box contest

In partnership with the City of Wooster, Main Street Wooster has launched a contest to decorate one of the Downtown Wooster utility boxes. The winning artist will receive a $500 prize. The deadline to enter is Sept. 25.

The utility box is on the corner of South Market and East South Streets, next to the former Lyric Theater (which has plans to reopen in the summer of 2024). Art contest submissions must be in digital format and should be based on one or more of the following uplifting themes:

Main Street Wooster

  • Nature/beauty of our area (cityscape, native flora, native fauna, etc.).

  • Wooster History / Historic Images

  • Wooster Landmarks

  • Arts & Culture

“This is the first of a series of contests to decorate downtown utility boxes,” said Main Street Wooster Executive Director, Shannon Waller. “We plan on doing at least five of them, thanks to the City of Wooster and our Board of Trustees allocating the necessary funding.”

The wrap will take a full day to install, and the weather needs to be above 60 degrees Fahrenheit with no rain. The vinyl wrap material is resistant to graffiti and has a lifespan of approximately five to seven years.

“After this first contest is complete and the wrap is installed, we'll see if we need to adjust anything before selecting the next utility boxes to wrap,” Waller said. “We expect the next contests to be launched in early 2024.”
